For a short time, a small commune in rural upstate New York spoke to a long-standing Western longing for utopia. Oneida was one of the best chapters in that book of dreams, and it may have come as close to realizing utopia as it is possible to do in real life. Today, the Oneida Community’s rambling construction of disparate parts in different styles called the “Mansion House” remains standing. It was America’s first communal home in which men and women lived in free association under one roof, and it documents the lifestyle and the various chapters of the Community’s history.
